The security costs to barring refugees and creating civilian ‘safe zones’ by Angry Planet published on 2017-02-07T16:41:31Z President Donald Trump signed an executive order temporarily restricting travel from seven Muslim-majority countries and halting the U.S. refugee program. One week later, after several legal challenges and protests at America’s airports, a federal judge blocked several key provisions of the order. Moral, legal and ethical questions aside, the ban would create national security challenges for America. This week on War College, Joshua Hampson of the Niskanen center walks us through the possible military implications of the executive order. According to Hampson, Trump’s plan plays into the propaganda of the Islamic State. He also critiques Trump’s new plan to solve the refugee crisis - creating “safe zones,” in Syria. Safe zones need protection – the Srebrenica genocide is a stark reminder of what happens when they aren’t – and the kind of camp Trump is talking about creating would require tens of thousands of troops to keep safe. Comment by dokoenig The vetting is very secure? Based on what? The FBI begs to differ: "FBI Director Admits U.S. Will Have No Basis to Vet Some Syrian Refugees" http://www.cnsnews.com/news/article/melanie-hunter/fbi-director-admits-us-will-have-no-basis-vet-some-syrian-refugees 2017-02-15T00:17:24Z Comment by Micah In my opinion, the notion that not accepting refugees is somehow more dangerous than accepting refugees is ridiculous. We haven't seen the potential effects of mass immigration from Middle Eastern countries, so it's unfair to say "the vetting process has worked fine in the past so there's no reason to change it". Also, the claim that this is somehow strengthening ISIS via propaganda opportunities is utter nonsense. 2017-02-08T20:52:29Z
